OTHER WORKS BY HOLTZBECKER
I. Gottorf Codex. Copenhagen, Statens Museum for Kunst, (Tu 123-126).
4 volumes, large 2 (500 x 380mm), floral frontispiece in volume I and a total of 1180 drawings on 363 vellum leaves. The plants are depicted with their bulbs or roots. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf with armorial stamp of Christian Albrecht, Friedrich III's successor. Lit.: H. de Cuveland Der Gottorfer Codex, 1989.
II. Husum (?) Florilegium. Copenhagen, Statens Museum for Kunst, (Tu 127).
2 (350 x 245mm), floral frontispiece incorporating flowers depicted in the album, 385 drawings on 178 vellum leaves. The majority of the vellum sheets form bifolia, folded so that the painted skinside faces outward. Contemporary or near-contemporary green velvet, edges gilt and gauffered (worn). Lit: H. de Cuveland, Der Gottorfer Codex, 1989, esp. pp.84-85.
III. Anckelmann Florilegium. London, British Museum, (197.c.7).
Oblong 4 (191 x 278mm). 85 leaves, most vellum. a few paper. Painted armorial of the Anckelmann family, floral frontispiece, and a wide variety of flowers and plants divided into three sections: 1) bulbous plants, 2) plants with roots, 3) trees and grasses; two early registers in German, one identifying the plants in plate order, the second an alphabetical plant list. Contemporary red morocco, gilt ornament at centre, stamped 'E A 1660' on front and 'ACA' on back cover, edges gilt and gauffered. Lit.: A. Griffiths & R. Williams, The Department of Prints and Drawings from the British Museum -- User's Guide, 1987, pp. 141-2, no.2; A. Scott-James, R. Desmond and F. Wood, The British Museum Book of Flowers, London: 1989, p.87, pl.72.
The Moller Florilegium, if not as grand in scale as the Gottorf albums, is closely allied to it in the fineness of its artistic accomplishment. It is without question finer than the Anckelmann and Husum florilegia, and, in its entirety, it is significantly larger than either of those two albums in the number of flowers depicted.
Only through the rediscovery of the present album has the Moller Florilegium been able to be identified and a major work added to the oeuvre of Holtzbecker. It restores a lost work of art to its true artist; it confirms Holtzbecker's contemporary reputation as an accomplished and highly regarded botanical artist; and it bears witness to the grand gardens of a leading Hamburg citizen. An album of great beauty and refinement, THE MOLLER FLORILEGIUM IS THE FINEST BOTANICAL ALBUM TO BE OFFERED AT AUCTION IN RECENT YEARS.
