Lot Essay

The Star was conceived as a small bronze statuette in 1918. Because of its commercial success, the artist enlarged the model and had it cast as a life-size bronze in 1923. A life-size bronze of The Star is in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio.

By 1948, Gorham Bronze Foundry had created 338 castings of the small statuette version of The Star. The present sculpture, an early cast in the edition as number 14, was created on September 8, 1920.
