Lot Essay

The poet, Robert Creeley, taught at the experimental Black Mountain College where much of the American avant-garde in the arts spent time in the 1940s and 1950s as student, teacher or artist-in-residence. In the last issue of The Black Mountain Review, published there in 1957, Creeley, who was its editor, included a portfolio of eight photographs by Harry Callahan. The present lot, lots 476-477 and 523-524 were obtained directly from Callahan for that purpose.
