HARVEY, Gideon (1640?-1700?). Morbus Anglicus: or, the Anatomy of Consumptions ... and Several Methods of Curing all Consumptions Coughs, and Spitting of Blood, London: N. Brook, 1666. 8° (137 x 87mm.) (one side-note shaved, somewhat spotted throughout), nineteenth-century cloth. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION of an early English work on tuberculosis to which the author has added Brief Discourses of Melancholy, Madness, and Distraction occasioned by Love. Harvey's works have no great scientific value. His more important role was ridiculing certain old world preparations, among others, theriaca and mithridatium. He maintained a long-running feud with the College of Physicians and in this he was supported by Charles II whose personal physician he became in about 1675 and who had a strong leaning towards irregular doctors. He ended his days as 'Their Majesties' [William and Mary's] physician of the Tower' and died in ca. 1701. Wing H1070; Krivatsy 5322; not in Wellcome.
