I was sure you would have a Republican State there...It is reported that the Northern Pacific will go right across the River on to the Missouri without a halt. If so you will get a stream from that direction soon, and be in the world..."; Two autograph letters signed, one to Mr. Scribner's Monthly, the other to Mr. W.N. Graham, 13 April 1881 and 10 November 1892, together three pages, 8vo, one quashing a rumour that Hayes was writing memoirs of his presidency, the other advising the proper way to obtain an autograph from a public figure -- TILDEN, SAMUEL, J., Governor of New York. Autograph letter signed ("S.J. Tilden") to C.W. Laurence, New York, 8 July 1845, 1 page, 4to, Tilden pointedly urges the reinstatement of a dismissed official: "[He was] an efficient and faithful officer..." together 4 items. (4)
