Lot Essay

Caffieri was a landscape, flower and sporting painter who studied in Paris before working in London and Boulogne. He often portrayed his subjects at work in the fields, on the coasts or in more domestic settings. In Boulogne he painted the fisherfolk. His vision of working life is typically gentle and idealistic rather than harshly realist. However his combination of delicate, almost pointillist, technique and prismatic colours demonstrates an understanding of French plein-air technique and Impressionist mores.
