Lot Essay

Archduke Joseph was a son of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain. He married, first, the short-lived Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna of Russia, second, Princess Hermine of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym and, third, Duchess Maria Dorothea of Württemberg. It was suggested by N. Keil (supra) that the head of the present portrait was painted by Füger and the rest was painted by his pupil Joseph Kreutzinger (1757-1829).
The second portrait in this lot possibly represents another son of Leopold II (1747-1792), Holy Roman Emperor and Grand Duke of Tuscany.
