HEINRICH JACOB POHLE OR POHL (DANISH, 1729-1747)
A pair of miniatures of Christian VI (1699-1746), King of Denmark and Norway 1730-1746 and his consort, Sophia Magdalene of Brandenburg-Kulmbach (1700-1770): he, in gilt breastplate over red velvet coat, ermine-lined red velvet coat decorated with gold coronets and wearing the blue sash of the Order of the Elephant, long powdered wig, a crown to his right; she, in red dress heavily embroidered in gold, drop-pearl brooch mounted on a jewelled bar at corsage, ermine-lined red velvet cloak decorated with gold coronets, gem-set gold tiara and string of pearls in her powdered hair; a crown resting on a blue cushion with gold tassel to her right

feigned ovals, 2½ in. (64 mm.) high, within rectangular gilt-metal frames with coronet surmounts, each reverse engraved with the sitter's initials (2)

Heinrich Jacob Pohle was court painter to King Christian VI of Denmark and other miniatures of the king and queen by him are in T. Holck Colding, Miniatur- og Emaillemaleri i Danmark 1606-1850, Copenhagen, 1991, illustrated in colour, plate volume, pp. 74-76, nos. 146 - 255.
