Lot Essay

After the Allingham's return to London from Witley Lord Tennyson's son, Hallam, suggested that they should visit their family home on the Isle of Wight where he wanted to show her 'some fine old cottages' to paint. Allingham first visited Freshwater in 1890 and returned there regularly. This view was taken from near Tennyson's property. For other examples of Farringford views see the catalogue of The Marley Collection of Watercolours by Helen Allingham, 19 September 1991, lots 29 and 33
