Lot Essay

Several versions of the present composition are known, mostly on copper and all with differences in the details. They include the pictures in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel; in the collection of the Marquess of Lothian; and in the Accademia, Siena. Of these, the present work relates closest to the Siena picture painted two years previously in 1602, which is Steenwyck's earliest known work.
Painted on panel, a Russian inscription on the reverse states that, like many other Flemish panels forced to contend with the Russian winters, this picture was transferred onto canvas in 1820.
