Lot Essay
Verschuring, who ended his career as a painter by becoming burgomaster of Gorkum, was a follower of Wouwerman in his paintings of horses and elegant companies, and of Jan Both in his Italianate landscapes. His cavalry and hunting scenes are compositionally less crowded than many of his contemporaries and often display an arrangement reminiscent of Wouwerman's: see for example that sold, Christie's, South Kensington, 27 October 1999, lot 177 (£11,500) or that sold, Sotheby's, London, 7 July 1999, lot 482 (£9,775).
