Lot Essay

The impression of silvery light filtering through the foliage, creating a play of light and shade on the bark of the trees in the foreground, is characteristic of Ten Cate's landscape drawings. The present drawing can be compared to a signed drawing, dated 1833, of the gate of Zuilenstein Castle near Amerongen, with a similar rendering of the trees, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1889-A-2005)
