Lot Essay

Second son of Emperor Paul I and Maria Feodorovna, he saw military service against the armies of Napoleon before being appointed viceroy of Poland. Upon his morganatic marriage he forfeited the right to the succession which allowed his younger brother Nicholas to succeed their older brother on his death in 1825, partly setting forward the Decembrist Revolution.
