Lot Essay

The artist, who was the uncle of Eugene Delacroix, studied under Antoine Vestier before joining the Academy where is recorded as working under Vincent and David. He fought as a soldier during the Revolution returning to painting around 1799. He was a regular exhibitor of portraits and miniatures at the Salon until 1814 at which time he travelled to Russia where he was to remain for seven years.
