HENRI-JOSEPH HARPIGNIES, MARGUERITE SEWING IN A LANDSCAPE, WATERCOLOUR, SIGNED, DATED, LOCATED AND DEDICATED

This watercolour represents Marguerite Ventillard (1829-1903), elder sister of the master glassmaker Joseph Ventillard (1836-1909), and the wife of Harpignies. Married in 1863, the couple separated 25 years later. Their wedding years coincided with the development of the spa resort of La Bourboule in the Puy-de-Dôme. It was during one of their stays there that the painter depicted his wife sewing, sitting on the grass.

Lot Essay

La présente aquarelle représente Marguerite Ventillard (1829-1903), sœur aînée du maître-verrier Joseph Ventillard (1836-1909) et épouse de Harpignies. Marié en 1863, le couple s’est séparé 25 ans plus tard. Leurs années de mariage coïncident avec le développement de la station thermale de La Bourboule, dans le Puy-de-Dôme. C’est lors de l’un de leurs séjours que le peintre y a représenté son épouse en train de coudre, assise dans l’herbe.
