Lot Essay

Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was descended from a Hugenot refugee father and an American mother. He joined the royal Navy as a midshipman after his fourteenth birthday. He resigned in 1830 and from then on became a man of letters. As a novelist his adventure stories became very popular in the first half of the 19th century, were based on his own experiences at sea, and are still read today.
