Lot Essay

Henry Moore was born in York, 1831, and towards the end of the century was to become one of England's most important artists. According to Maclean, his biographer, he was to pioneer in his willingness to 'regard the sea, by itself and for itself, as a subject worthy of the artist's attention'. In his search for accuracy his technique become more fluid and his colours more impressionistic.
