Lots 67-72 This diverse and interesting collection of landscapes by Henry William Banks Davis shows his versatility as a plein air oil sketcher and his mastery in constructing monumental exhibition quality landscapes. These works have remained in the artist's family and since his studio sale at Christie's in 1915, where two of the present lots were sold and bought back by family members, have not been offered at auction. Davis's works from the 1850's and early 1860's were much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and his pictures show a high level of observation and detail. Later he broadened his style and he turned to larger size works. He was elected A.R.A. in 1873 and R.A four years later. Two pictures were bought by the Chantry Bequest and his work was immensely popular and made high prices at auction during his lifetime.
