Both studied in Warrington, Lancashire, before moving to London to work as illustrators for magazines such as The Graphic. Woods was captivated Venice and settled there sending Venetian subjects to the Royal Academy each year from 1878 until his death in 1921. Fildes and his wife Fanny were frequent visitors, and Venetian scenes also formed an important part of Fildes's oeuvre. (He is perhaps best known for social realist scenes, such as The Doctor of 1891, now in The Tate, and the coronation portraits of Edward VII and George V). From his house in Melbury Road, Holland Park, where Leighton, Watts and Marcus Stone (see lot x) were neighbours, Fildes acted as agent for Woods which accounts for the descent, within the family, of these sketches.
