Lot Essay
Woods was a painter of Venetian genre scenes having first visited that city in 1876 at the suggestion of his brother-in-law, the artist Sir Luke Fildes. He was so captivated with life in Venice that he settled there permanently and devoted the rest of his life to painting scenes of everyday life in the streets and canals. His style has been compared to that of Fildes and also shows the influence of other members of the foreign colony in Venice such as Cecil van Haanen and Eugene de Blaas. His work is represented in the Tate Gallery, London and in the Aberdeen, Liverpool and Leicester City Art Galleries.
