Lot Essay
In the present lot Koekkoek painted a group of hussars of the '2nd Royal North British Dragoons' who were later on to be called 'The Scots Greys'. This regiment earned their reputation in the battle of Waterloo where they made a courageous charge, supposedly crying out "Now my boys, Scotland forever!"
The regiment only rode grey horses, hence their knickname 'The Scots Greys'. The hussar's uniform was worn from 1810 until ca. 1907
We kindly thank Mr. J.A. Buijse, director of the Leger Museum, Delft for his help in cataloguing this lot
