HIERONYMUS.  Commentaria in Bibliam, edited by Bernardinus Gadolus, Venice: Joannes and Gregorius de Gregoriis, de Forlivio, 25 August 1498. 2° (331 x 218mm). 340 leaves (of 845, lacks all before quire II and the blank yy8), 60 lines and headline, roman, and a little gothic, letter, fine white-on-black woodcut border on AAa2r with a large historiated initial, repeated several times, 2 woodcut devices, on PPp8r (white-on-black) and QQq6r, large woodcut initials. (Bound in a somewhat haphazard order, repaired tear in CCc5, lower half of QQq6 cut away necessitating repairs in the next 2 leaves, II1 inlaid and lacking one letter of text). Modern 15th-century style blind stamped calf over wooden boards with clasps, original pastedowns from a 10th or 11th-century manuscript Bible on vellum preserved. Provenance: H. Legel (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. The fine border (illustrated) was first used in an edition of Herodotus printed at the same press in 1494. The two vignettes depict, at top, a faun preparing a goat for sacrifice, and at bottom, Heracles at the parting of the ways with the initials S.C.P.I. on a loom. Hain 8581; BMC V, 350; Goff H-160.
