GREEK, DATED 1865
The Mother of God and Christ are flanked by Saint Nicholas and Saint Eleftherios. The lower register shows the emperor Saint Constantine and his mother Saint Helena raising the True Cross, flanked by two of the most popular Saints in Greece, Demetrios and George. The traditional iconography of the Hodegetria is supplemented by Western features, for example the crown and the white transparent veil under her maphorion. The golden details and haloes stand out amidst the deep colours of the garments and the green background.
10 7/8 x 14 7/8 in. (27.75 x 37.75 cm)
Signed in Greek, in the traditional Byzantine manner: 'By the hand of Ioannes:G:B:' (the surname is abbreviated).
