Lot Essay

The travel journal appears to relate to events leading up to the second Anglo-Afghan war (1878-80) in which the British, French, Persians and Russians were involved. A list of names, apparently the authors travelling companions, appear at the start and include Muhammad 'Ali Mirza, Amir Nizam, 'Umid al-Dowla and Nasr al-Dowla, the latter two of which are frequently mentioned.
