HONDIUS, Jodocus (1597-1651). America. Amsterdam, ca. 1606.

Engraved map of the Americas, outline color in a contemporary hand, image 378 x 500 mm (413 x 547 mm sheet). With "Terra Australis," inset view of native Brazilians making a local beverage (copied from the de Bry illustration of Hans Staden's voyage), embellished with ships and sea creatures. (Some light browning, short tear to lower margin affecting image repaired on verso.)

Originally engraved by Hondius for the first edition of his edition of Mercator's atlas (1606). "Produced on a stereographic projection like more and more maps of the time, it is an amalgam of various sources. It incorporates a more correct west coast of South America and narrows still further the longitudinal width of New Spain at the Tropic of Cancer... However, like all cartography before, it still retains an enlarged North American continent" (Burden 150). Schwartz & Ehrenberg p.108.
