Lot Essay

In the words of the artist, the present work is a "balancing art of the 5 basic elements". According to the Chinese cosmic belief the 5 elements "Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal" are inter-related and inter-dependant. This relationship is expounded in these words:

"Water can help tree (Wood) grow.
Wood can help Fire to burn.
Fire can help to produce dust (Earth).
Earth can help mineral (Metal) to form.
Metal can hold Water"

For the artist, the essence of the interaction of the 5 elements are movement, changeability and development. Interaction comes about as the 5 elements are in search of harmony and an equilbrium. Hence, the balancing act takes place in search of an order.

Steeped in the study of classical Chinese literature and calligraphy, it is only natural that the works of Hong Zhu An demonstrate a profound sense of classicism which is made relevant to the contemporary audience by the artist's witty execution and unique interpretation as shown by the present work - 5 fish.
