Lot Essay

The Duke of Clarence and Avondale was the eldest son of The Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). During the investigation of the Jack the Ripper murders in the early 1890s, there was some suggestion, never remotely substantiated, that he might have been the culprit. His younger brother, the Duke of York, eventually became King George V.
