This painting was dedicated to Zhenggang.
Gu Zhenggang (1902-1993), courtesy name Shuchang, was born in Anshun, Guizhou. The Gu brothers (including two others named Zhenglun and Zhengding) once held positions in the Kuomintang (KMT) Central Standing Committee. Gu graduated from Berlin University in Germany (later renamed Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin) in 1925 and the next year entered Moscow Sun Yat-sen University in the Soviet Union to continue his studies. In 1927, Gu returned to China and then took up various important positions in the KMT and the government. Gu was acquainted with many artists, including Huang Junbi, Zhang Daqian, and Liu Zigu.
This painting is evidence of Gus friendship with the artist. The image depicts the artist's journey to Mount Yandang with his friend and fellow artist Zhang Daqian in the 1920s. Mount Yandang is also well known for its rock formations, secluded caves, and waterfalls, and therefore attracted visits from liteatis and refined scholars.
