Hubert Stowitts, the American painter and dancer, travelled for two years throughout India between 1928-1930, living with and painting portraits of a wide range of characters from all walks of Indian life, from Indian potentates to humble craftsmen which formed the basis of the exhibition Vanishing India, hosted by the Los Angeles Museum in 1931.
