2 volumes, 8° (213 x 131mm). Wood-engraved title vignettes after Tony Johannot. (Vol. I with small worm trace at outer margin of 11.2.) Crimson straight-grained morocco gilt by R.D. Canape, covers with wide border of multiple fillets with corner-pieces, gilt spine compartments with central device of a cathedral window, gilt turn-ins, satin doublures, gilt edges (joints lightly rubbed), morocco-trimmed slipcases.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. 'Les exemplaires de la première tranche, sans mention d'édition et sans nom d'auteur sont extrèmement rares' (Clouzot). Johannot's title-page vignettes show Quasimodo in the pillory receiving a drink from Esmeralda (vol. I) and Esmeralda escorted to the gallows (vol. II).
