2 works in one volume, 8o (163 x 103mm). (Worming to leaves F4-G8 of the first work with slight loss to text.) 18th-century Belgian or Dutch speckled calf gilt, covers with thin outer gilt border of double fillets and a dog-tooth roll, spine in six compartments with raised bands, light brown morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed, joints weak). Provenance: early inscription; Amselm vanden Bogaerde (bookplate); Frédéric & Anne Max (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION OF PLANTIN'S CELEBRATED REPRINT OF THE TRIDENTINE INDEX OF 1564, prefaced by the Bull of Pius IV, and followed by the extensive Appendix (pp. 56-106) of books prohibited in the Spanish Netherlands, including books in French, Flemish and Spanish, among them works by Rabelais and others printed by Plantin himself; this list was most probably compiled by Arias Montanus. As is often the case, the Index is preceded by the 8-leaf Edict. This was issued in the name of Philip II, and includes instructions on how the Index should be implemented - the books had to be burnt. Adams I-97 (first work) & P-1013; Peeters-Fontanas 621 (first work); Voet 1442 & 1444
