Provenance
The Hon. John Spencer, Althorp, where recorded in his posthumous inventory of 1746, by George Knapton, in the 'picture Clossett [sic]' (311, 'Christ & the Woman of Samariah by Tintoret'), and by descent through his son, John, 1st Earl Spencer, recorded in the Picture Closet in 1750 (without attribution) and in the 'Dowager Lady Spencer's [Georgiana, widow of the Ist Earl] Bedroom' in 1802 at Althorp; Sotheby's, London, 3 July 1985, lot 9, when purchased by the present owner.
