Lot Essay

The 't Spaarne canal was dug in 1631, prompting the construction of many country and tea houses along the waterside; by the eighteenth century, more than one hundred of these had been built. A similar view of the canal, painted in 1778 and taken from a standpoint a little further forward from that of the present work, was sold, Christie's, Amsterdam, 14 May 2003, lot 203 (164,450 euros).
