Lot Essay

Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1753-1844), entered the French Army in 1780, rising to the rank of Maréchal in 1804. In 1810, he was adopted by the childless King Carl XIII as heir to the Swedish throne, succeeding the latter as Carl XIV Johan in 1818. He married Désirée Clary, the sister-in-law of Joseph Bonaparte, in 1798.
