Lot Essay

Jacob de Wit depicted the subject of Paris and Oenone, a scene from the youth of Paris on Mount Ida (Ovid), several times during his career. For example, the signed and dated '1737' painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and the picture that was with Christie's, London, 18 December 1953, lot 150 (see A. Staring, Jacob de Wit, 1958, p. 144).
