Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie for suggesting the attribution to Jacob Marrel (private communication, 31 October 2000). Mr. Meijer believes the present painting to be a late work by the artist and comparable to a still life from 1676, sold, Christie's, New York, 10 January 1980, lot 33 (where erroneously dated 1656).
