Lot Essay

Although it is not been possible to link the present drawing to a finished print, it is very likely that it was conceived in connection with a series of portraits of historical figures, shown in cartouches, drawn by Buys around 1780 and engraved by Reinier Vinkeles after his designs for J. Kok, Het Vaderlandsch Woordenboek, in 1785-86. There are numerous examples from the series in the Rijksmuseum.
