Lot Essay

Jacobus Storck treated the subject of the facade of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano in 1671 in several signed drawings (for instance in the Collection de Grez, Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels and one sold with Christie's, Amsterdam, 15 november 1993, lot 64). Also his brother Abraham Storck used the motive more than once; for example in a picture formerly in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

We are grateful to Mr Pieter Roelofs of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph and his help in cataloguing this lot (verbal communication, 1 March 2010).
