Lot Essay

A study for the figure seated on the right of The Supper at Emmaus painted by Empoli in 1601 and now in the Church of S. Giuseppe Artigiano in Galluzzo near Florence, E. Testaferrata, Il Pontormo a Empoli, exhib. cat., Empoli, Chiesa di Santo Stefano degli Agostiniani, 1994, no. 31. Empoli painted another version of the same subject in 1609.
Two other related drawings are in the Uffizi, one in pen and wash for the whole composition and another in chalk on prepared paper for the figure seated at the front left of the composition, E. Testaferrata, op. cit., nos. 32-3.
