Lot Essay

Although little is known about the life of Jacopo da Valenza, several signed and dated works survive by him, which enable a chronology of his oeuvre to be established. Still revealing the profound influence of Alvise Vivarini, the present picture can be dated to the first decade of the sixteenth century, probably painted shortly before his Madonna and Child with Saint Augustine and Saint Justina, dated 1509.

That this is one of Jacopo da Valenza's most succesful compositions, is illustrated by the numerous repetitions he painted. Another version of this composition with a similar landscape is in the National Museum of Fine Art, Budapest.
