JACQUES-ANDRÉ PORTAIL, TWO STUDIES OF A STANDING MAN FACING RIGHT, BLACK AND RED CHALK

A virtuoso with red and black chalk, Portail often studied the human figure as in the present drawing, which can be compared to the stuidy of a dancer in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. 1963-15-24; see X. Salmon, Jacques-André Portail 1695-1759. Cahier du dessin français no. 10, Paris, 1996, no. 41, ill.).
