Lot Essay

The present composition closely relates to a painting, dated 1805, sold at Sotheby's London, 13 December 2001, lot 64 (£150,000). In addition there are two more versions, one in reverse and dated 1802 in the Georg Schäfer Collection, Schweinfurt and the other sold at Christie's, London, 21 June 1985, lot 55 (see C. Nordhoff & H. Reimer, Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737-1807 Verzeichnis seiner Werke, Berlin, 1994, vol. II, p. 148, no. 304 and 305, illustrated).

We are grateful to Dr. Claudia Nordhoff for confirming the attribution from a transparency (private communication, 22 September 2003).
