Lot Essay

James Arthur O'Connor moved from Ireland to England in 1821 and made sketching tours around the country. A view of Worthing Beach, dated 1827, is known, so it is probable that he visited the South coast at that time (J. Hutchinson, James Arthur O'Connor, Dublin, 1985, p. 122). In the present picture, the structure on the right is almost identical to the Pump House in Brighton, although the wooden structure and enlarged groyne cannot be positively identified.
