Lot Essay

Innes discovered Rhyd-y-Fen Inn near Arenig in the autumn of 1910 and spent time painting near there as well as at Nant-Dhu, a cottage which he and Augustus John rented during the following year. In December 1911 Innes exhibited Welsh landscapes at the second Camden Group exhibition. Eric Rowan comments that 'Undoubtedly, Innes' most favourite mountain was Arenig, and he painted it from all viewpoints, and in all weather conditions'. (see E. Rowan, Mostyn Art Gallery exhibition catalogue, Some Miraculous Promised Land, Llandudno, 1982, p.25).
