Lot Essay

James Ford (d.1889) of Wraxall, Somerset, was born in Bristol. An obituary for him in The Times (19th December 1889) records that he was the chairman of the firm of Messrs. Ford and Canning and was leader of the Conservative party in Bristol for many years. The Fords had three children who were all born at Clifton: Andrew Hamill; Hugh and Roger.
