Lot Essay

In order to stay anonymous during the judgment of their work by the jury, the students of the academy were all randomly given an initial to sign their paintings with. This explains why the present lot is signed with the initial M; it was Ensor's letter during this assignment.

To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist's work, currently being prepared by the Belgian Art Research Institute.
