Michelgrove was one of the finest houses in Sussex and was home to the Shelley family from the late 15th century to 1800. Built circa 1540 for Sir William Shelley, Justice of the Common Pleas, it was enlarged by Sir John Shelley in the 18th century. Passing into the ownership of the 12th Duke of Norfolk in 1828, it was demolished by him soon afterwards.
