JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER Whistler Mother and Child, No. 4 (W. 135; S./S./T. 54) lithograph, 1891 and 1895, on tissue-thin laid Japan, a good, clear impression of this very rare print, S./S./T.'s only state, signed with the butterfly in pencil, from the lifetime edition of only 6 or 8 impressions, with full margins, the palest light-staining, otherwise in very good condition, framed L. 5.5/8 x 9.1/8 in. (143 x 232 mm.)

Lot Essay

No impressions of this rare lithograph were left in Whistler's estate at the time of his death, nor was there a posthumous edition. Aside from the example offered here, the five other known impressions are all located in museums.
