Lot Essay

This is a version of a successful composition devised by Jan Breughel the Younger and known in at least three other autograph treatments that include the pictures in the Prado, Madrid; the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin; and with Galerie Müllenmeister, Solingen (see K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jüngere, Freren, 1984, pp. 270-3, nos. 87-9).
