Lot Essay

A study with minor differences for Brueghel's picture of A cattle pond by a country road (The Londoner Viehtränke), signed and dated 1616, now in the Wellington Museum at Apsley House, London (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere (1568-1625), Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Cologne, 1979, no. 306, fig. 43). The picture was part of the Spanish Royal Collections until it passed into the hands of the Duke of Wellington following his victory over the French at the Battle of Vittoria in June 1813.
